Art is a way of life for this homeschool family. My children are always creating and inventing. We go through art supplies like water. I have to admit I’m fond of anything that helps us keep the mess down. So I was thrilled when we were offered a chance to review some mess free art supplies. My daughters have been having a ball with the Thin Stix 6pk of Classic Colors from The Pencil Grip, Inc.
Thin Stix are like paint markers for lack of a way to describe them. They are like a marker in that the paint comes in the little pen like tubes with a cap. Inside the tubes is solid tempera paint sticks. Turn the small dial at the bottom of the tube to raise up the pain (like a glue stick), and you are ready to “paint.” The paint dries to the touch in about a minute and a half. You do not need brushes or water to paint with these bad boys. There is nothing to spill and nothing to wash afterward. How glorious is that?
Thin Stix work on all kinds of paper, cardboard, wood, and even canvas. The Thin Stix version that we received is different from the other version of Kwik Stix that has been available for some time in that are intended to be used on projects where detail might matter. They are much thinner than other versions of the same product. They’d be fantastic for poster making. My girls appreciate how the color stays right where they put it. Unlike traditional paints that are much wetter the colors never run together. It is possible to draw a yellow sun and moments later fill in the sky right around it without the disappointment of the colors mixing and turning your creation green.
We had the chance to review the big brother thicker version of these a couple of years ago and fell in love with them back then. Since then I’ve gotten into the habit of purchasing them for all kinds of reasons. They make fantastic gifts for birthdays and holidays. I’ve even bought stacks of them for our church kids classrooms and our homeschool co-op.
I gave these to my 7-year-old and 2-year-old daughters to enjoy. Yes, even a toddler can paint mess free! They filled pages and pages and pages of paper with their creations. The color glides on nice and smooth. The colors are tremendously vibrant. Even those these are the “Thin Stix” it was still easy for them to paint in larger sections of their pictures pretty quickly. There is no arguing because someone stuck the yellow brush in the green paint ruining the color. It is delightfully peaceful when they are “painting.” Unless, of course, they both want to use the same color at the same time! There is always something isn’t there? That could easily be solved with another package. While painting they, of course, smeared some of the paint on things they shouldn’t, like our kitchen table. I was so pleased when the paint wiped right off with a little bit water. Such easy clean up!
If you have kids in your life, you have to have these. It is as simple as that!
